Sydney 2000 OC – The Olympic Flag, Olympic Hymn and Oaths

Written by admin on January 23, 2009 – 12:52 am -

One of the main highlights of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games opening ceremony: the Olympic Flag, Hymn and the Oaths.

First, the Olympic Flag was carried by these 8 past Australian Olympic athletes into former Stadium Australia:

- Bill Roycroft: gold medalist in Rome 1960 and bronze medalist in both Mexico City 1968 and Montreal 1976 in the 3-day eventing equestrian event;
- Murray Rose: 3-time gold medalist in Melbourne 1956 and a gold, silver and bronze medalist in Rome 1960 in men’s swimming;
- Liane Tooth: gold medalist in both Seoul 1988 and Atlanta 1996 in women’s field hockey;
- Gillian Rolton: gold medalist in both Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 in the team 3-day-event equestrian event;
- Marjorie Jackson: the women’s 100m and 200m athletics events gold medalist at Helsinki 1952;
- Lorraine Crapp: double gold medalist and a silver medalist at Melbourne 1956 and a silver medalist at Rome 1960 in women’s swimming;
- Michael Wenden: 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals at Mexico City 1968 in men’s swimming; and,
- Nick Green: gold medalist at both Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 in the coxless four men’s rowing event.

Is it true that this Olympic Flag was really made just for Sydney 2000? If so, where is it now?

Next, the Olympic Hymn was sung in GREEK by the Millennium Choir of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. It was played by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Only twice has the Olympic Hymn sung in GREEK before Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. They were in Athens 1896 and, believe it or not, the Calgary 1988 Olympic Winter Games.

Finally, the Olympic Oaths were taken by the following two people:

- Rechelle Hawkes: in behalf of the Olympic athletes. She was the 2-time gold medalist at Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 in women’s field hockey. She would then win her third gold medal in the event at Sydney 2000.

Note: Did you hear that additional line about doping in the current Athletes’ Oath that wasn’t there before for Atlanta 1996?

- Peter Kerr: in behalf of all Olympic judges and officials.

PS: Sorry for the “shaking part” near the end of this clip. My VCR wasn’t really cooperating then.
