HRTV Inside Information – Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation

Throughout the country correctional facilities seek to rehabilitate prisoners as they serve out their terms of sentencing. To stem the tide of recidivism, some innovative prisons in Iowa and New York for are utilizing programs – in ociation with such organizations as the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation — to teach prisoners through hands on instruction how to care for horses. In the process many of these hardened criminals find that not only are the horses lives changed for the better, but so have their own.
In Iowa, the warden of the Newton Correctional Facility has seen these changes first hand, “These guys all their lives have bullied or pushed their way to get what they want. So when they come down to deal with the horses, these huge animals, they can pull them all they want but the horse gives them what they’re willing to give. So they have to learn other techniques in getting a horse to comply with what they want done, whether it’s go right, left, stand still. So it teaches them another way to deal with animals then ultimately dealing with people.”
Inmate Skyler Steenahoek at Newton has had his life transformed by the experience, “Personally, well I kinda made a mess of my life and it gives a chance to work with animals, learn something new… gives me an opportunity to learn a new trait. You learn empathy really quick down here when you see horses that are hurt and you give them care… it’s really kinda emotional…”
